Sony Xperia Active gets its Android ICS update

Sony Ericsson Xperia ActiveIt looks as though owners of Sony’s (or rather Sony Ericsson’s) diminutive 2011 toughphone, the Xperia Active, will finally get their promised 2012 tasting of Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Sony Xperia Support blog, revealed the update is rolling out now, meaning the Active is on track for the previously announced May/June update.

Sony has played its update roll out in a significantly different manner to its competitors. As the first three handsets of the company’s 2012 lineup (the Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U) launched still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, when the competition were already rocking ICS, it was thought that Sony would put a concerted effort into bringing them up to scratch as soon as possible.

As it transpired, Sony had always intended to bring the latest iteration of Android to its 2011 device portfolio first and all three of their NXT handsets are still waiting on the upgrade. The Xperia Active is the most recent Sony (Ericsson) handsets to make the jump to ICS.

Xperia Active owners should visit the Xperia Blog and cross check the number highlighted (known as the Sales Item or SI) in the above image with the list already published. If you haven’t yet found anything, don’t forget to check back on a regular basis for your helping of toughened ICS.
