Sony Xperia S Ice Cream Sandwich update arrives

Sony has been performing like clockwork to release updates through its entire 2011/2012 device portfolio and today it’s the turn of the company’s flagship handset, the Sony Xperia S to get the update to Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich.

With the exception of the Sony Xperia PLAY, users of Xperia branded smartphones have slowly been upgraded to the latest version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich. In a somewhat backwards fashion, Sony decided to implement the roll out in 2011 handsets before touching the 2012 family, meaning last year’s flagship the Sony Xperia Arc S had the opportunity to play with ICS whilst this year’s flagship, the Sony Xperia S has remained stuck on Android Gingerbread 2.3.7, until now.

Sony has produced a video on the Xperia Product Blog, detailing the new additions now available with the arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich on the Xperia S. The fundamental ICS improvements are welcome on the S experience, such as app or notification dismissal, resizable widgets, as well as fine grain mobile data usage controls.

Sony has improved the general user experience with new music player visualisations, an enhanced photo album UI and quick access to phone settings from the notifications panel.

To check for the update on your device, head to www.sonymobile.com/software and you’ll be taken through the update process to grant your Xperia S with Android ICS 4.0.4, finally. The update hasn’t yet arrived on our Xperia S, but hopefully it will be arriving very soon.
