Sony has launched two new smartphones right at the beginning of 2018, the Xperia XA2 and the XA2 Ultra. These affordable mobiles offer strong specs for a price that won’t cripple your savings, but what’s the difference between them and which might be best for you?
We’re only a week into 2018 and already Sony Mobile has pulled back the curtain on some new mobile phones. The Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra are sequels to a pair of handsets that were released in the UK last year, namely the Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra. You can expect an affordable asking price despite the respectable mid-range specs and gorgeous design.
Question is, how do the XA2 and XA2 Ultra stack up and which one is better suited to your needs?
Sony Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra design
Both of these new Sony devices boast a stunning edge-to-edge display, meaning they’re pleasingly thin when grasped. Like last year’s models, they sport a metal chassis that’s sleek yet rugged.
You can pick them up in a handful of colours. Silver, black, blue and pink are your choices for the Xperia XA2. Meanwhile the Xperia XA2 Ultra comes in silver, black, blue and gold.
While Sony used to stick its fingerprint sensors on the edge of its smartphones, both the XA2 and XA2 Ultra feature a scanner on the back instead. This should fall naturally under your fingertip when you pick up the device.
The only major design difference between these Sony blowers is the sizing. The standard Xperia XA2 has a 5.2-inch screen, so should prove relatively simple to use with one hand. However, the 6-inch Xperia XA2 Ultra is a much more formidable beast, best suited to two-handed use.
Sony Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra specs
The Xperia XA2 and the Ultra model both use a Full HD display, although visuals will appear sharper on the standard version thanks to its reduced screen size. Sony panels rarely disappoint and we’re expecting crisp, vibrant images to be produced by both handsets.
The 3580mAh battery of the Ultra is larger than the 3300mAh cell of the normal Xperia XA2, although we’re hoping for over a full day of use in either case. Quick Charge is supported by both new phones, for a nippy recharge.
You get the same smartphone smarts in these Sony mobiles also. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 chipset is on board, offering respectable everyday performance from Android Oreo.
Sony Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra camera tech
There’s no difference between these Xperia handsets as far as the rear camera technology is concerned. Whatever your choice, you’ll get a 23-megapixel shooter with Sony’s 1/2.3 Exmor RS sensor. You can shoot up to 4K resolution video, as well as capture home movies with the funky new 120 frames-per-second slow motion feature.
However, the selfie setup is quite different. Around the front of the standard Xperia XA2, you get an 8-megapixel super-wide-angle lens that can capture 120-degree images. However, the Ultra version serves up a dual lens front-facing camera, with 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel snappers. The first lens boasts OIS and the second lens is again 120-degree wide-angle, complete with a flash for low light snaps.
Sony Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra release date and pricing
Both the Xperia XA2 and the Xperia XA2 Ultra will hit the UK in February 2018. O2 will be the only UK provider to offer the XA2 in silver, with prices starting from £28 per month. You can see the full tariff information and everything else you need to know on O2’s Xperia XA2 page.
