Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3: Design

The Sony Xperia Z3 and LG G3 are two premium devices, so of course they rock a premium finish. Sony’s Xperia is a 5.2-inch slab of sexiness, with the usually sharp edges nicely rounded off for a more comfortable fondle. Those glossy surfaces may soak up fingerprints, but there’s no denying the Z3 has style pouring out of every port. What’s more, it’s fully water-resistant so you can dunk it in your pint without it cocking up.

The LG G3 is also gorgeous, even though the seemingly metallic frame is actually made of plastic. It’s not water resistant like the Z3, but the body is impressively slender and light despite packing a 5.5-inch screen. That makes it comfortable to wield, while the rear-mounted buttons are also well-positioned for your fingertips.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3: Screen and media

Both the LG G3 and Sony Xperia Z3 sport gorgeous and spacious screens, which really make the most of HD movies. So if you’re looking for a phone to stay entertained on the go, you can’t go wrong.

Sony’s panel is particularly strong when it comes to colours, producing bold images across the full spectrum. However, the G3 sports an incredibly sharp Quad HD resolution, producing the most impressive images we’ve seen on a smartphone. The difference is noticeable, especially when enjoying 4K content, giving the G3 a future-proof edge over the Z3.

When it comes to sound, Sony’s phone has a little more up its sleeve however. The Z3 supports high-res audio and also features built-in noise cancellation, as long as you’re using Sony’s earbuds.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3: Performance and battery life

As for performance, both phones will happily blaze through the latest games and apps with no stuttering or other ill effects, thanks to the identical Snapdragon 801 processors. You can even multi-task on the G3 and Z3, using apps side-by-side.

And despite all that power and the enormous screens, these mega-mobiles will still last a day and a half of reasonable use between battery charges. There are power saving modes too, if you’re struggling to make it back home with just the battery dregs remaining.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3: Cameras

The Xperia Z3 and LG’s G3 aren’t just two of the best-looking phones of recent times, they also sport some of the best camera hardware too. Sony’s smartphone rocks a 20.7-megapixel snapper, while the LG makes do with a mere 13-megapixels – but both cameras shoot crisp and clear photos across a range of conditions, thanks to excellent auto modes. You shouldn’t miss any magical moments either, as there’s almost zero shutter lag – helped in the G3 by the funky laser-guided auto-focus.

Both phones can shoot 4K video too, but Sony also throws in a ton of bonus features, many of which are aimed at social media fans or kiddies. So you can quickly compile vine videos or stream direct to your YouTube or Facebook accounts, or turn your bedroom into some kind of cartoon nightmare with the VR mode. If you’re a fan of selfies, the G3 is a safe bet thanks to its fist-pump guided front-facing lens, which snaps gorgeous ego-stroking shots.

Verdict

The LG G3 and Sony Xperia Z3 are two of the best phones of 2014, which makes choosing one over the other incredibly tough. For visuals, the LG G3 has the future-proofing edge thanks to the crisp Quad HD screen, although media fans won’t be disappointed by the Xperia Z3’s bold and vibrant panel. And Sony’s phone is the more rugged of these two thanks to its water resistance.
