T-Mobile G1/HTC G1/HTC Dream gets an Ice Cream Sandwich port, looks slower than a snail on tranquilisers

Everyone’s crazy about Ice Cream Sandwich coming to the current generation of Android phones and understandably so. While the jury’s out on just how far back the reach of Android 4.0 will go, that hasn’t stopped some enterprising modders from porting it to older phones – like the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 – already.

The buck has to stop somewhere though and where better than with the T-Mobile G1 (aka HTC G1 aka HTC Dream), the first ever Android device?

This port is the work of XDA-Developers ‘Recognized Developer’ jcarrz1 who has kindly posted a video of the efforts.

This is an alpha/intial release so we can forgive it for looking a little slow in the video. But speed gripes aside, it appears to work. We think that’s a pretty amazing feat, considering the device is over three years old and runs on a teeny tiny 528 MHz chip.

Chances are the T-Mobile G1, as it was called here in the UK, won’t be seeing any official Ice Cream action from Google. So if you’re keen to track the progress of jcarrz1’s efforts, hit up the link below.
