TalkTalk to enter mobile phone market later this year

We’ve been perusing TalkTalk’s preliminary results for 2012 and doing our best ‘impressed’ faces at the results – which are actually quite impressive – and we have come across a very interesting little chunk of information nestled away in the paper – TalkTalk is to enter the mobile arena later in the year.

The results states: “We plan to launch a handset proposition later this year in addition to our existing SIM only and data products”.

TalkTalk currently sells SIM-only plans, with a number of tariffs running on the Vodafone network. The company has an impressive user base of 70,000 mobile customers, which it says it is continually growing, in addition to its phone and broadband services.

The SIM-only market has been TalkTalk’s main priority since delving into the mobile scene and the company states: ‘We have built an impressive 7.5% share of the UK SIM-only market since launch and as expected, have seen significantly lower churn on this customer base.’

The handset manufacturing business is a whole other ball game though and TalkTalk will be facing very stiff competition, so we imagine it would avoid the competitive high-end market.

Virgin Mobile currently offers a PAYG and Pay Monthly phones alongside it’s sim-only offers, broadband and television, with some very attractive deals for its customers. TalkTalk could do something similar and with such a large user base, we’re certainly interested to see what the proposition is.
