UK supermarket Tesco just added an innovative new feature to its iPhone app: barcode scanning.
It’s not designed to be used in-store. Instead, it’s so you can add items to your online Tesco shopping list as you see them, to ensure you haven’t forgotten specific items when you sit down to actually do your online shop.
Tesco reckons it will appeal particularly to ‘busy parents and time-poor professionals’. So, you might scan the barcode of some food packaging as you run out of it, for example.
“We’re always looking for ways to make life easier for customers and for busy mums in particular,” says Tesco.com CEO Laura Wade-Gery. “The barcode scanner will make online ordering much quicker for those that have an iPhone.”
The scanning feature is in the new version 2.0 of the app, which has now gone live on the App Store. Tesco’s announcement talks about barcode scanning being available ‘initially’ through the iPhone app, so we’re assuming it will be launching at some stage in Tesco’s Nokia app too, as well as on other platforms.
