From today UK network Three is allowing customers to make calls and send texts over a WiFi network, whenever signal is weak or non-existent, without the need of the Three InTouch app. Here’s everything you need to know about Embedded WiFi, including how to install the update and what mobile phones are compatible.
There are few things more annoying than when you’re expecting a call or desperately trying to text someone, only to hit a signal black hole. But thankfully you no longer have to ram your handset against the nearest brick wall when this happens, with features like Embedded WiFi around to help.
UK network Three has already helped out its users when they stray into signal vacuums with the Three InTouch app. Three InTouch used to route your calls ands text messages through your connected WiFi network if no signal was available, but this feature required you to enter and use the app. This meant any calls and messages made through WiFi wouldn’t show up in your usual logs and text conversations.
But with the new Embedded WiFi feature, Three customers will be able to seamlessly continue calls and text conversations even when signal dies.
Which mobile phones are compatible with Three’s Embedded WiFi feature?
Three’s Embedded WiFi service is available right now for a wide selection of iPhones, as well as some Android devices.
Compatible Android devices at launch include the LG G5, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
If you’re an Apple fan, you can use Embedded WiFi with the iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will be compatible from mid-February 2017. We’re chasing Three to find out which other devices will be supported in 2017.
How do I use Three’s new Embedded WiFi feature to make calls and send texts via WiFi?
All you need to do is update your phone when Three sends the OTA update to your handset. Head to the settings menu and then About Phone > System Updates if you’re on Android. If you’re an iPhone user, head to General and then System Updates.
When the update is installed, Android users will automattically have the feature activated. For iOS, head into the Settings and then Phone and WiFi Calling, and switch it on to activate.
Existing InTouch users will receive a pop-up message when they’re all set, and can then delete the old app.
Does Three’s Embedded WiFi feature work abroad?
Right now you can only place and receive calls and send messages over WiFi if you’re in the UK. However, it’s possible that this feature could be extended to foreign destinations in the future. We’re chasing Three for more info.
