Toshiba Excite Write Review: Hands On

The new Toshiba Excite Write builds on the already stellar hardware setup used by one of the company’s other freshly announced tabs; the Excite Pro, but to take things up a notch it features a Wacom digitzer with stylus support just for good measure.

With Computex in Taipei already in full swing, Toshiba also decided to hold a London shindig to give us in the UK a first eyes on of its newest wares too. Along with the Write and Pro we also saw the company’s new entry-level tab, the Excite Pure.

Whilst all three tablets feature Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the Toshiba Excite Write is the top dog in this latest lineup. Like the Excite Pro, users will be able to utilise the tablets brand-new Nvidia Tegra 4 quad-core processer – this being one of the first examples of a mobile device using Nvidia’s new flagship mobile processor. In addition there’s a stunning 10.1-inch 2560×1600 PixelPure display, which gives the likes of the Retina-savvy iPad and Google Nexus 10 cause for concern.

The aforementioned stylus integration is really what the Write is all about. With the same 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity and in fact the same general hardware from Wacom as can be found on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, the Excite Write is aiming squarely at those who hold productivity above all else.

Whilst in our encounter the software surrounding the integration was still being finished off, the final version of the TruNote application which comes pre-installed on the Write will let users sketch, write and even draw out tables, which it will then convert into formal geometric shapes, text and accurate renderings respectively. Adding to this, the app also allows sharing of content produced to other applications like Office or to email.

As well as the pen integration, the Write is also a competent multimedia tablet, with the high quality visual experience backed up by dual stereo Harman Kardon speakers, expandable memory via microSD and the inclusion of a miniHDMI-out.

The design looked to be the Write’s weakest aspect when we encountered it, with an almost indistinguishable aesthetic across all three new devices, as well as a heavy use on unexciting textured plastics.

Toshiba says the Excite Write along with its new Android tablet siblings should touch down sometime in Q3 later this year, but with a price tag of around £499, does it offer enough bang for its buck, we’d like to think so, but we can’t make our minds up until we truly put it through its paces.
