Unlocked open market Samsung Galaxy Tabs to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread in “the next couple of weeks” via Kies

An update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the original Samsung Galaxy Tab is due to arrive ‘within the next couple of weeks’, according to a source at Samsung. As is the norm with Samsung Android updates, you’ll be able to download it via the Kies desktop app, which is a Windows-only affair.

As we understand it, the update will be first made available to those who’ve bought ‘open market variants’ of the Galaxy Tab; i.e. you didn’t buy it on contract from O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Three or Vodafone.

We’re asking the networks asking for a rough ETA on this. So far, O2 has said that it’ll most likely be coming in early August. We’re waiting to hear back from the others and will keep you updated accordingly.

Though you won’t be able to get the full Honeycomb experience, you can at least enjoy the improved text cut ‘n paste, better download/app management and the rest of the improvements that you get with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
