UPDATED: Android is now top smartphone OS in the UK, iOS shrinks

Given the sheer number of the blighters it doesn’t come as a shock to see Android coming top of the smartphone market.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, their survey puts Android at the top with a dominating 44.9% share of the smartphone market in the UK.

In the last 12 weeks, Android has grown from 35.1% to nearing half of all smartphone devices. It’s an impressive jump in only around 3 months, proving the increased demand for new smartphones, and cheaper substitutes to the still strong iPhone, though it did lose 13.3% in the last period.

RIM saw a small increase in its share of the smartphone crowd.

Also claiming top spot in the US, Germany and France, Android has been able to steal away customers from Nokia’s Symbian OS, which has shrunk from 31% in 2010 to just 10% this year.

Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech ,said: “There is no denying that Nokia has lost a significant amount of customers over the last 12 months…

“However, many of the remaining customers appear to be far more loyal to the brand, trading up to Nokia Smartphones from Nokia non-Smartphones.”

UPDATE: We’ve got our hands on the full breakdown of OS share.
