Virgin Media launches remote recording TiVo app

Virgin Media has announced a new app providing TV listings information for its new TV on demand service TiVo. Virgin Media TV Guide is available for Android smartphones and offers a service similar to its satellite based rival Sky+.

Available as a free download, we downloaded Virgin Media TV Guide to our Samsung Galaxy SII. It’s very well designed; sporting the same red interface familiar to TiVo users from its set-top box.

It’s also very easy to use; select your region and TV package to ensure it only shows the channel information available and relevant to you. Alternatively if you don’t fancy wading through lots of channels, you can customise it to ensure the channel list only displays favourites.

Schedule information is displayed in a channel list displaying current and next program, click an entry to reveal a brief synopsis and running time, along with options to text or email the suggestion to a friend via your phone contacts. Perhaps most useful is the ability for TiVo users (with log-in details) to set recordings for your box remotely, up to 35 minutes before the program starts.

Alex Green, from Virgin Media, said: “Virgin Media’s TiVo Service is the best way to watch TV and our new mobile app enhances that experience by ensuring you’ll never miss recording a programme whilst out and about’

Virgin Media TV Guide is available now as a free download for Android handsets running 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. It will be available on the Apple App store, although Virgin Media has yet to confirm a date.
