Vodafone launches Nearly New: discounted pre-owned smartphones

Vodafone has launched Nearly New, offering pre-owned smartphones a discounted prices on PAYG or Pay Monthly tariffs.

Choosing Nearly New means PAYG customers can pay up to £155 less than the upfront cost of a phone, alternatively Pay Monthly customers will pay less per month over the term of the contract.

According to Vodafone the majority of pre-owned smartphones in the UK are bought from eBay. Phones sold on Vodafone Nearly New will come with a minimum12-month or 24-month warranty.

A Vodafone UK Spokesperson comments: “Nearly New is designed to make it even more affordable for people, especially those who prefer pay as you go services, to get their hands on a smartphone and start using the mobile internet. It is part of our ambition to get the internet into the hands of our customers.”

 

What’s Vodafone Nearly New?

Nearly New offers Vodafone customers the chance to buy second hand (refurbished) phones that have been returned by Vodafone customers. Buying Nearly New means you can save money on either the upfront cost of the phone on PAYG, or pay less per month on a Pay Monthly contract.

Vodafone says it is targetting pay as you go users looking to make the leap from feature phone to smartphone.

What condition are phones sold as Nearly New in?

All the handsets have been returned in ‘good condition’ by Vodafone customers. They are tested, wiped and re-boxed with accessories.

Each phone bought on PAYG comes with a 12-month warranty, while Pay Monthly customers get a 24-month warranty.

What phones are available on Nearly New?

Prices will vary on a month by month basis, depending on what Vodafone calls ‘variations’ in the handsets. Currently the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS are available on PAYG and the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3 are available on Pay Monthly.

The iPhone 4 8GB on Nearly New PAYG costs £250, in comparison to £405 on Vodafone’s website or £319 from Apple. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is free with unlimited calls and texts Pay Monthly tariffs starting at £33 a month, in comparison to £37 a month for a new phone.

When does Nearly New launch?

Nearly New is available for PAYG phones across all stores now, and will be launching online the week commencing January 6th. Nearly New Pay Monthly tariffs are available in selected stores and online.
