WhatsApp records 64 billion messages in one day

WhatsApp hits a record for messages sent and received in 24 hours.

Instant messaging WhatsApp has a hit a massive record for messages sent and received in a single day, even topping New Years Eve. One a day this week, 64 billion messages were exchanged on the popular messaging service. WhatsApp announced the record on Twitter yesterday, writing: “new daily record: 20B messages sent (inbound) and 44B messages received (outbound) by our users = 64B messages handled in just 24 hours.”

WhatsApp counted a single message sent to a group as separate received messages, but it’s still an impressive number.

The record even beats New Year’s Eve. As 2014 ticked away on the last day of the year, WhatsApp users sent 18 billion messages, adding up to a total of 54 billion.

Is it any wonder Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion? As a 3rd-party messaging app, it’s made its way onto more mobile operating systems than practically any other similar service out there (we’re not factoring Facebook Messenger in this equation) and it’s still growing. The next step for the messaging service is to set going voice chat for users.
