Yahoo! will begin encrypting all of its data next year

Yahoo! was named earlier this year as one of the companies that the NSA was siphoning data from as part of its sweeping surveillance program, but the company isn’t letting the news slide. Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!, says that the company will begin encrypting all data sent between its servers next year.

All of Yahoo!’s services – including Mail – will be SSL encrypted with a 2048-bit key starting from January 2014. Mayers says that any information moving between Yahoo!’s servers will be encrypted, and that users will soon have the option to encrypt all data sent to and from Yahoo!.

The rollout will begin on January 8th with Yahoo! Mail. Mayer says that Yahoo! aims to have its encryption plans in place by the end of Q1 2014.
