HTC Desire 816 and Desire 610 announced: Quad-core heroes for the masses

HTC has announced two new mid-range phones, the Desire 816 and Desire 610, at Mobile World Congress.

Both the Desire 816 and the Desire 610 pack quad-core processors and come with trademark HTC features including the HTC Zoe camera mode, made famous by the HTC One, BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers and the BlinkFeed news and social feed aggregator.

Prices for either have yet to be announced – let’s hope they take a leaf out of the Moto G’s book and keep the cost barrier to quad-core heaven low.

HTC Desire 816: The perfect selfie machine

Despite coming with many of the same features, the HTC Desire 816 looks to be the more powerful of these two phones.

Boasting a 5.5-inch screen 720p HD (720×1280) and a 5-megapixel front facer, HTC is touting the Desire 816 as the perfect selfie machine.

As well as taking big shots, the front camera has a back and side illumination, meaning those narcissistic auto-shots should look clearer and more defined. You can also record 1080p Full HD video on the Desire 816’s front camera, which should excite would-be Vine auteurs. Let’s not forget the main camera either; 13-megapixel sensor with an f/2.2 lens that also captures Full HD video.

HTC CEO Peter Chou said: “The HTC Desire 816 marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the mid-tier.

“Incomparably beautiful to look at and hold with the technology and software to match, the HTC Desire 816 challenges everything that people expect from lower cost smartphones. It is bringing genuine choice to the category by delivering stunning design and high-end performance at unbelievable value.”

The Desire 816’s quad-core chip clocks in 1.6GHz and is 4G compatible. The HTC Desire 816 will launch in China in March while the rest of us will have to wait until April. An update to Sense 5.5 will be made available over the air post launch.

For those with smaller hands, the Desire 610’s 4.7-inch screen might be more up your alley. As with the Desire 816 you get a 1.2GHz quad-core chip running the show and 4G LTE.

HTC says that the Desire 610 will be coming to the UK and the rest of Europe in May, but a solid date and prices haven’t been announced.

Similarly there’s no mention yet if these phones run Android 4.4 KitKat or not, but we’d be surprised if that wasn’t the case.
