Here’s what we’re expecting to see at Nokia’s October 22nd event

Nokia has pencilled in an event for October 22nd to show off some new Lumia devices, but what exactly does the Finnish company have in store? Let’s drill down into the details.

Windows Phone goes big

The largest Windows Phone to date has been Samsung’s Ativ S, a 4.8-inch device loosely based on the Galaxy S3. Otherwise, there hasn’t been anything that has broken the 5-inch barrier, despite Android welcoming huge devices such as the Galaxy Note 3 and Xperia Z Ultra.

That’s set to change, though. Multiple leaks and reports have indicated that Nokia will announce a 6-inch Windows Phone on October 22nd, dubbed the Lumia 1520. Specifications for the rumoured handset are said to include a 6-inch 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC, a 20-megapixel camera, and LTE connectivity.

It will mark the first time that Windows Phone has made the jump to 1080p too. An upcoming update to the mobile operating system – called GDR3 – will add support for the higher-resolution, bringing with it an extra column on the homescreen for even more tiles.

Nokia’s stellar design and build quality will make a return on the 1520 as well. Leaked pictures suggest that just like other Lumia handsets, it will be constructed from unibody polycarbonate, as well as being available in a variety of colours. Red and yellow versions of the phone have leaked so far.

Windows… RT?

Nokia may also have a tablet to show off. The company is reportedly working on a 10.1-inch slate running Windows RT – referred to as the Lumia 2520 – that will feature a similar design to its current Lumia handsets.

Specifications are said to include a 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 6.7-megapixel camera. The tablet is said to measure 8.9mm thick while weighing 590 grams. The price, however, may be a potential sticking point for a lot of owners. Rumours suggest that Nokia’s tablet will be sold for $499 in the United States – that’s the same price as the iPad.

A range of accessories is also planned for Nokia’s tablet, but only one has been detailed so far. The “multi-function cover”, as it’s called, will provide protection for the tablet in addition to bumping up battery life. Runtime without the cover is expected to be around 10 hours.

Naturally, Nokia will release the tablet in a range of colours. Twitter tipster @evleaks has shown off the red and cyan versions of the slate, and we imagine more will be shown off at the event.

Filling out the range

The Finnish smartphone manufacturer may have two additional phones to show off. One is the Lumia 825, a handset that allegedly includes a 5.2-inch 720p display, along with a quad-core processor. Details are otherwise scarce.

The other phone is the Lumia 525, a budget handset that will reportedly place an emphasis on music playback. Again, information is light right now, but Nokia may use the handset to promote its Nokia Music service while bundling a pair of special headphones.

Hello, Abu Dhabi

The Lumia 525, 825, 1520, and 2520 makes for four potential announcements at Nokia’s event, but there could be two additional products. The Verge believes that Nokia will have six in total to show off on October 22nd, with one in particular labelled as “very special.” It’s anyone guess as to what that means, though.

We’ll find out exactly what Nokia has planned for the world on October 22nd. Recombu will be live at the event covering the news as it happens, but we’ll update this article between now and then if there’s anymore pertinent information.
