Samsung Galaxy S2 sales hit 5 million

Samsung has announced that sales of it’s flagship Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone have surpassed 5 million units.

According to Samsung the figure was reached within three months and 85 days, so there’s a good chance it will hit the 10 million mark by the end of the year. This figure also includes units shipped to channels and operators.

Samsung hasn’t released a breakdown of sales, but it has said that it has 56% market share in South Korea, as well as being number on in several European countries.

The original Galaxy S handset was a huge success for Samsung too, shipping 5 million handsets within five month. Although the Galaxy S2 has a long way to go before it catches up with Apple, the iPhone 4 sold over 14.1million in one quarter in 2010, with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 sales totalling 20.34 million in the last quarter.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 has been a huge success for Samsung since it launched earlier this year. Running Android 2.3 and powered by a dual-core processor it’s exceptionally slim and it;s 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen is one of the best currently available on a smartphone.

There are also rumours Samsung will be introducing a cheaper version called the Samsung Galaxy R, which retains many of the features, with the exception of the screen. Although Samsung has refused to confirm if this will be coming to the UK.
