Samsung has finally announced that it’s iPod Touch rival – the Samsung Galaxy WiFi – is now available in the UK.

First spotted at CES this year, the Galaxy WiFi is a music and video player compatible with apps from the Android Market. It offers all the functionality of a Galaxy smartphone, of course without the phone capabilities and the Super AMOLED technology in the screen, seen in the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Two versions are available, both running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 includes a 5.0-inch 800×480 TFT LCD screen, it has a 3.2-megapixel camera and front-facing VGA camera. File support is MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, ACC and FLAC for audio and WMA, WAV, OGG, ACC, FLAC for video.

With a smaller 3.6-inch 480×320 the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 has a 2-megapixel primary camera and VGA front camera.File support includes: MP3, WMA9, Ogg, Flac, AAC and MPEG4 /H.264 / DivX/ XviD/ WMV

Both include Bluetooth 3.0 and WiFi, along with the usual Android services like Mail and Calendar and of course a 3.5mm jack for headphones.

Simon Stanford from Samsung UK and Ireland comments: “With the Galaxy Wi-Fi we have created a device that allows consumers all the fun and freedom of our other Android Galaxy devices. Consumers can choose from thousands of exciting apps and communicate with friends using the Social Hub or even services such as Skype.’

We’re looking forward to trying the Samsung Galaxy WiFi, it seems crazy that there hasn’t been an Android alternative to the hugely successful iPod Touch.

The Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 is available now, priced £199 for 8GB and £219 for 16GB, the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 3.6 launches in November for £149 for 8GB and £169 for 16GB.
