Samsung Galaxy Xcover: rugged Android phone released

Ever wished the Samsung Galaxy S2 was a little more rugged? Samsung Germany has the solution: the Galaxy Xcover is a dustproof and waterproof Android 2.3 handset designed for those with an ‘active lifestyle.’

According to information on the Samsung Germany website  it has a scratch-resistant 3.65-inch touchscreen, while the body attains IP67 certification, which means as well as being dustproof it can survive going underwater between 15cm-1m deep for up to half an hour.

Other features include a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED photo light (which Samsung says can also be used as a flash and signal light) and HSDPA speeds of 7.2Mbps

Incorporated into the handset is Samsung Social Hub 2.3 and looking at pictures from the handset it appears unsurprisingly to be running Samsung’s custom UI TouchWiz. Otherwise it looks a little like a HTC handset, with the grey/gold finish and three solid Android back, menu and home keys.

We’re quite impressed with the design; it’s certainly a long way from the chunky Samsung Solid Immerse, and much closer to the Motorola Defy. Combining tough credentials with a styling you’d be happy to show off and features useful for every day.

It’s a busy time for Samsung. Earlier we brought you news that the Galaxy R has finally been confirmed for Europe and yesterday it was apparently not pre-warned of Apple’s injunction regarding the Galaxy Tab 10.1

The Sasmung Galaxy Xcover will be available in Germany from October, but there’s no news on when this will come to the UK.
