Sony Xperia Z4 Compact: In a nutshell

We take a quick look at the fully-leaked specs and features of the upcoming Sony Xperia Z4 Compact, a 4.7-inch smartphone packing some serious next-gen specs…

Sony’s next flagship phone, the Xperia Z4, is set to launch in Vegas in just a couple of weeks as part of the massive CES (Consumer Electronics Show). But it won’t be alone if rumours are correct, as the Xperia Z4 Ultra and Xperia Z4 Compact may also make an appearance. We’ve already seen plenty of leaked details on the Xperia Z4 Ultra, but what can we expect from the Xperia Z4 Compact?

What is the Sony Xperia Z4 Compact and why should I care?

In a world of massive phones, 2014’s Xperia Z3 Compact bucked the trend by packing premium specs into a 4.6-inch frame. We were so delighted that we declated it our second-favourite Android phone of all time.

The Xperia Z4 Compact is a natural progression of the Xperia Z3 Compact, bringing the new flagship features and specs to a smaller 4.7-inch handset. That’s 0.1-inches bigger than the Xperia Z3 Compact, which in turn was 0.1-inches bigger than the Xperia Z1 Compact. We’re hoping that doesn’t mean that by the time we hit the Xperia Z6 Compact, these mini marvels will have hit a hand-filling five inches.

You’ll get a super-powerful new Snapdragon 810 processor crammed into the Xperia Z4 Compact, backed up by 3GB of RAM, which should give silky smooth performance for the duration. A 20.7-megapixel camera with Sony’s latest lens tech will be present, plus a 5-megapixel front-facer.

Expect powerful stereo speakers, wireless charging and of course Sony’s usual water resistant design, which looks as good as it feels in the hand. There should also be 4G LTE Cat 9 support and NFC.

What’s the Xperia Z4 Compact’s expected UK price and release date?

Rumours seem to clash over when the Xperia Z4 Compact will actually be unveiled by Sony, with some sources stating it’ll emerge at CES, and others pointing to an MWC launch (early March 2015) instead. The latter is more likely as the Snapdragon tech might not be 100% ready to go for January, and also Sony needs to hold some cool stuff back for MWC, which is the biggest mobile expo of the year.

So, we’d expect the Sony Xperia Z4 Compact to launch early March and then hit UK stores late March, for around £450 to £499.
