A hybrid Porsche – has the world gone mad? Actually, no. Rory Reid blasts around in the very capable Panamera S e-Hybrid, a luxury four-seater that cares about the environment. Some of the time.
There’s definitely a stigma around hybrid cars, but with cars like the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder using it for breathtaking power and improved efficiency, people are slowly cottoning on to the potential.
At the more ‘affordable’ end of the Porsche range is the Panamera S e-Hybrid, a hybrid version of the four-seater luxury cruiser. It ditches the 4.8-litre V8 you get in the Panamera S and 4S in favour of a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 partnered up with a 95hp electric motor and 9.4kWh battery.
The result is a car capable of more than 100mpg at best and less than 20mpg at worst, depending on the state of the battery charge and how hard you push the 416hp on tap. Either way, a mere 71g/km of CO2 emissions leave the exhaust, making it exempt from tax and London’s congestion charge.
Whether you love or hate the looks, there’s no denying its performance prowess: 0 to 62mph in 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 168mph. Check out Rory Reid’s verdict below.
