BT announces new slimline YouView+ box: Free for new customers or a £35 upgrade

BT has officially taken the wraps off one of its worst kept secrets, the new YouView+ box.

Borrowing the streamlined styles of its Home Hub 4 and Home Hub 5, the new YouView+ box has a silver strip sitting beneath a series of downlit status lights for power, recording and broadband.

Confirming what we’d already heard from early adopters who bought one from Argos, you get a 500GB hard drive which lets you record up to 300 hours of SD TV or around 125 hours of HD content. You can pause and skip back live TV and record up to two channels at once.

The new look BT YouView box: Faster, slimmer, flashier

A quick look at the spec sheet suggests that not much has changed from the original BT TV box. Alex Green, director of BT TV, reveals that the overall performance of the new box is an improvement on its predecessor.

Green said: “The new YouView+ box from BT has all the functions and features that viewers love about the service, but it’s even better.

“It’s been a big hit with customers who have already tried it out. They’ve said it is smaller, quieter and faster. The new YouView+ box from BT has been designed in the style of other BT devices, so will look great in any living room.”

As well as offering a faster all round performance, BT’s new TV box is slimmer than the original, a re-skinned Humax DTR-T1000. In keeping with the slimline design, the new remote is also thinner.

The new BT YouView+ box gives you access to the same Freeview HD channels plus the option of additional channels including SyFy, Comedy Central and TLC delivered over a BT Infinity broadband connection.

Film & TV box sets can be added for £5/month and Kids channels, including the Disney Channel and Cartoon Network costs just £3/month.

BT Sport, which gives you BT Sport 1 & 2 and ESPN in standard definition, is free with BT Infinity. You can get BT Sport in HD, along with 8 other channels in higher definition, for an extra £3/month.

Existing customers who already have the new box can upgrade for £35.
