BT Sport Europe prices bump up cost of Virgin Media TV XL

Virgin Media has revealed the full costs of getting the new BT Sport pack, including BT Sport Europe, with its TV service.

The new BT Sport pack, which comprises BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2, BT ESPN and BT Sport Europe in SD and HD, will cost £18/month instead of £15.

BT Sport will continue to be included in the top tier TV XL bundle of channels, but as of August 1, new customers will have to cough up £3/month extra. If you’re an existing customer (or if you sign up now) the new price rise won’t kick in ’til September 1.

This price rise applies whether you’re taking TV XL as part of the Big Daddy or Big Kahuna Bundles or you’re simply taking it with a Virgin phone line, from the start of September onwards it’s going to cost £3/month extra.

Gregor McNeil, managing director of Virgin Media Consumer said: “Some of our prices are changing so we can continue to offer our customers the best choice of entertainment.

“The new Champions League deal is the biggest ever and our price change reflects our continued investment in giving our customers more of what they want – we are proud to remain the only provider to offer all the major sporting action in one place.”

Virgin TV XL gives you over 230 digital TV channels and from September 1, will include Nat Geo Wild HD as well.

Here’s how the prices for Virgin TV XL break down now and how things will look when the new BT Sport prices kick in.

Virgin Media TV XL on its own

Virgin TV XL with a V HD Box £28/month £31/month
Virgin TV XL with a 500GB TiVo box £33/month £36/month

The V HD Box is driveless, so you won’t be able to record any shows on it.

With the 500GB TiVo box, you can record up to 250 hours of standard definition TV or 50 hours of HD TV. The 1TB box gives you twice that amount – 500 hours of SD or 100 hours of HD TV – but you’ll need to pay a one-off £49.95 charge for it, whereas the other two boxes are free.

You also need to take a Virgin Phone line with TV XL. Line rental for this is charged at £16.99/month.

If you want to add broadband into the mix, then there’s a number of Virgin Media Big Bundles to pick from. Here’s how much they all cost now and how much you’ll pay after the rise kicks in.
