Freeview on a phone app TVPlayer has just added Japan Broadcasting’s NHK World channel.
NHK World is a free 24-hour English language news and information channel which comes from Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai, Japan’s public broadcaster; it covers Japanese current affairs and lifestyle and is currently broadcast to more than 150 countries worldwide, reaching 280 million households.
TVPlayer lets users legally stream free-to-air channels on a number of devices and is made by Simplestream, whose technology has allowed premium channels like CNN, Cartoon Network and BoxNation to arrive on Internet-connected Freeview HD boxes.
“Simplestream has become one of the most exciting media companies in Europe,” said Yoshihiko Shimizu, President and CEO, Japan International Broadcasting. “We are delighted to partner with them to deliver a variety of top quality and compelling international news and entertainment via their TVPlayer platform in the United Kingdom.”
TVPlayer’s deal to show the channel highlights the service’s growing popularity. It’s currently the fastest growing over-the-top platform in the UK, letting users’ stream live content from BBC One, Channel 4 and Channel 5, The Box, S4C and more.
NHK World will join the likes of BBC News, Al Jazeera, RT, France 24 and Bloomberg on Simplestream’s service on both TVPlayer and selected Freeview HD devices.
