We’ve reviewed and rated the best Samsung smartwatches you can buy in 2017. Here’s everything you need to know about Samsung’s Gear smartwatches, including their best features and differences between the various models. We’ve also covered if the Samsung smartwatches work with your Android phone or iPhone, to avoid any nasty surprises.
Samsung is one of the biggest mobile phone manufacturers in the world, but the Korean company has also launched several smartwatches in the past few years. Samsung’s ‘Gear’ smartwatches come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, from the basic Gear Fit fitness trackers to premium feature-packed watches that are rivals to the Apple Watch.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Samsung Gear smartwatches, including what phones they work with and which Samsung smartwatch is best for you.
Best Samsung smartwatch: Will Samsung’s Gear smartwatches work with my phone?
At the very start of 2017, Samsung added iOS support for the Samsung Gear S2, Gear S3 and Gear Fit2 wearables. Previously they would only work with Android phones, but now they work with iPhones too.
If you have an Android mobile, Samsung recommends that you must be running Android version 4.4 or later. You can check your current version by going to the phone’s settings menu and scrolling down to About Phone. You should also have at least 1.5GB of RAM. Check Recombu’s review of your phone to see how much memory is packed inside – the full specs list is at the end of each review.
If you have an iPhone, Samsung recommends that you have an iPhone 5 or later for it to function well with a Gear smartwatch. You should be running at least iOS version 9 too. To check which version of iOS your iPhone runs, head to the settings and then General, and then About. The version is listed next to Version (obviously).
Best Samsung smartwatch: Samsung Gear S3
|Release Date:||November 2016|
|Our Review:||Samsung Gear S3 Review|
Samsung’s latest smartwatch boasts some seriously top-tier hardware, plus Samsung’s custom software which packs in plenty of powerful features. Somehow it’s cheaper than Apple’s Series 2 smartwatches whilst retaining all-important components like GPS, all wrapped up in what is arguably a nicer, more approachable design. You even get a choice of finishes, between the Gear S3 Classic or Frontier.
That said, the Gear S3 could use some better third party software support, something the Apple Watch has in droves. But that minor quibble aside, this is one of the best smartwatches you can buy right now.
Best Samsung smartwatch: Samsung Gear S2 Classic
|Release Date:||November 2015|
|Our Review:||Samsung Gear S2 Classic Review|
Samsung’s Gear S2 Classic may have been released back in 2015, which makes it near ancient in tech terms. However, we’re still big fans as the S2 Classic boasts slick design, a smart and intuitive interface and perfectly tuned controls.
Aside from a couple of little issues such as some rather frustrating mapping, Samsung’s Tizen OS is a solid alternative to Android Wear which supports all of the features you’d expect. Thankfully the library of apps to download is growing too, although still in need of some third party love.
Of course, the Gear S2 Classic isn’t too cheap, still costing over £200 despite its age. That said, it’s a solid alternative to the Gear S3 if you want to save a bit of cash.
Best Samsung smartwatch: Samsung Gear S2 3G
|Release Date:||June 2016|
|Our Review:||Samsung Gear S2 3G Review|
You could certainly argue that the Samsung Gear S2 3G is still one of the best smartwatches you can buy in 2017, with its enticing offer of attractive hardware, intelligent user interface, slick performance and deep functionality. It’s great fun to use and does pretty much anything you need.
The main difference between the Gear S2 3G and the Gear S2 Classic is the inclusion of SIM card support in this model. You can slip a SIM into the watch itself, which allows you to stay in touch with your contacts even when your phone is dead.
Of course, the 3G component adds the additional expense of a monthly contract on top of an already high (although not quite Apple Watch-high) price tag, while offering little benefit in return. Undoubtedly there are users who would find the added freedom and convenience that the Samsung Gear S2 3G affords a blessing, however. And there’s always the S2 Classic for everyone else.
Best Samsung smartwatch: Samsung Gear Fit2
|Price:||Free with Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge|
|Release Date:||January 2017|
|Our Review:||Samsung Gear Fit2 Review coming soon|
The Gear Fit2 is a sports band, or fitness tracker, which you slap on your wrist before you start cycling or jogging. The built-in heart rate sensor can monitor your pulse and built-in GPS means you can track your exact route (including distance covered) without having to lug your phone around too.
Samsung’s Gear Fit2 has a good-sized 1.5-inch screen which gives live feedback of your vitals, or can simply tell you the time outside of your exercise sessions. And with slick design and a choice of funky coloured wrist bands, you’ll probably want to rock the Fit2 everywhere you go.
The Gear Fit2 is water resistant to a depth of one metre, and can stay submerged for up to half an hour, thanks to its IP68 certification.
