Google launches new Nexus phone and tablets

Google has taken off the covers of its latest range of Android-powered Nexus hardware with two tablets and a smartphone.

Despite Hurricane Sandy destroying Google’s plans for an event in New York to show of the devices, the firm showed off three machines running an updated version of its Android mobile OS, Jelly Bean (4.2).

The Nexus 10, made by Samsung, is a 10-inch tablet, which will see Google compete directly with Apple’s original iPad. Google claimed that the tablet had the “highest resolution tablet on the planet”, at 2,560 x 1,600 for 300ppi on the 10.055in display, compared with the iPad’s resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, which offers 264ppi.

The Nexus 10 sports a dual-core ARM Cortex A15 chip with a Mali T604 graphics processor. It weighs 603g and boasts a front-facing 1.9-megapixel camera as well as a 5-megapixel one on the rear. There are micro-USB and micro-HDMI ports. And while is comes with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, it doesn’t have mobile broadband.

Google claimed around nine hours of battery life. It will starting retailing 13 November, and will cost £319 for a 16GB version and £389 for a 32GB version.

There was also an update of the Nexus 7, which was launched earlier in the year. Everything remains the same for the Asus manufactured tablet except that Google has now launched a 32GB model, priced at £199 and ditched the 8GB model in favour of a 16GB version for £159. The new Nexus 7 will also run Android 4.2.

 

    

    

 

To complement the tablets, Google announced the launch of the Nexus 4 smartphone. The device, made by LG comes with 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus panel display and sports a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro mobile processor. The display

It features wireless charging but will not run 4G. The Nexus 4 also touches down on 13 November, and will cost £239 for the 8GB version and £279 for 16GB.
