Grand Theft Auto III Anniversary Ed. coming to iPhone 4S, LG Optimus 2X and more next Thursday: Wot, no Galaxy S2?

A special ten-year anniversary edition of everyone’s favourite car-jacking, cop-baiting sandbox game is headed to mobiles next week.

iPhone 4 and 4S owners will be able to mow down pedestrians and hire ladies of the night as well as LG Optimus 2X and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 owners. Costing $4.99 (roughly £3.20), both the iOS and Android versions are set to be released concurrently, next Thursday the 15th of December.

To the chagrin of Samsung Galaxy S2 owners, the award-winning Android phone of the year won’t be supported in the initial release. HTC Sensation owners won’t initially be getting a look in either.

The supported list of Android phones from launch looks to be a little on the thin side, not to mention US-only heavy:

Apple iOS Devices: iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 & 4S, iPod touch 4th Generation

Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x

Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

Still, at least we ought to be able to motor around Liberty City on our Android tablets; we’d prefer to do so on a bigger screen anyways. Screenshots here are of the Android (topmost) and iOS versions respectively; so far so faithful to the original. We do wonder if any of the more risque elements of the game get airbrushed out of the iOS edition.
