LG X Screen hands-on review: Before Mobile World Congress had even begun; LG pulled the wraps off a duo of mid-rangers for 2016, the LG X Cam and the LG X Screen. Here’s our hands-on review of the latter from Barcelona.
According to LG, the focus of the X range is to offer “one exceptional feature at a price that rivals mid-range smartphones.” In the case of the X Screen the phone’s hook is that it comes with a secondary always-on display, just like the LG V10.

The phone’s main 4.93-inch HD In-cell Touch display packs 720p HD resolution and nice overall brightness, clarity and colour head-on. Naturally it isn’t anywhere near as sharp as the Quad-HD display of the company’s new flagship, the LG G5 and viewing angles appear relatively weak by comparison too. However, when the main display is off, you can fall back on a smaller secondary display.
There’s a 1.76-inch 520×80 LCD nestled up alongside the front-facing 8-megapixel camera that’s always on. When using the phone’s main display this lets you easily jump between applications and toggle settings, but whilst the main display is off, you can continue to get at media controls, notifications and basic information.
Beyond the display setup, the phone is a mix of shiny, fingerprint-prone plastic, surrounded by a metal frame with a centrally positioned 13-megapixel camera on the back, that doesn’t snap at a particularly fast rate, but appears to produce shots with plenty of detail.
The user experience as a whole is founded upon Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but as part of 2016 iteration of LG’s heavily skinned user interface overlay, elements like the apps drawer have completely disappeared; a divisive design choice more often than not.
To round out the X Screen experience internals fall to a 1.2GHz quad-core processor (LG representatives on the company’s MWC stand were unable to confirm which one), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD) and a 2300mAh battery.
Stay tuned for a full review, very soon.
