Fans of recording the modern world through trendy analogue equipment rejoice for Lomography has released the LomoKino Smartphone Holder. This is an accessory that bolts a phone on to the recently released LomoKino camcorder.
The LomoKino is a hand-cranked ‘movie maker’ that shoots 144 frame mini movies onto a roll of 35mm film. The crank pulls the film across the lens, recording images on it as you turn the handle, creating a stop-frame/time-lapse style effect.
Once you’re done, you can then watch them through the separate LomoKinoScope Viewer, a separate projector mechanism that’s again, entirely hand-powered.
Alternatively, you can send your reels of film off to the LomoLabs to get them developed and digitised. If that seems like too much of a faff or you can’t wait, then this is where the LomoKino Smartphone Holder comes into play.
Line up your Lomo
The idea is that you slot your film into the LomoKinoScope Viewer, attach this to the LomoKino Smartphone Holder and then line up your phone’s camera lens.
You then hit record on the phone’s camcorder app and get cranking – the projector will then beam the film directly into the phone’s lens. A bit of a workaround admittedly but who cares – it’s analogue. Analogue is cool. Check out the cute cat video at the bottom for an idea of how the films look.
That said, Lomography is “confident that the product should work with all smartphones which have the camera in the upper side / corner of the device,” as well. HTC Sensation-owning would-be auteurs can rest easy.
If you’ve not got a LomoKino already, then Lomography is currently selling the whole bundle for £98.95, for the Smartphone Holder, the KinoScope projector and the LomoKino itself.
If you’ve already got one, the LomoKino Smartphone Holder can be had on its own for £19.90.
