Motorola: Ice Cream Sandwich for XOOM 2 and XOOM 2 Media Edition in Q3 2012

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich logoMotorola has refreshed a post on its forums detailing the lengthy Android upgrade process, adding new ETA dates for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The XOOM 2 and XOOM 2 Media Edition tablets in the EMEA region are now in line to get upgrades to Android 4.0 in Q3 of 2012, or by the end of the summer in normal-speak.

No word just yet on how these updates will arrive – our guess is that it’ll be over the air (OTA) which was the case with updates to Android 4.0.3 hitting Wi-Fi-only XOOMs in the US last month.

Also of note is that the dual-core Motorola Atrix transforming laptop-phone looks to be in line to get Ice Cream Sandwich too. It’s apparently in the ‘upgrade in planning’ phase, suggesting that it’s cleared evaluation for Ice Cream Sandwich, but it’s too early for an ETA to be announced just yet.

Owners of the RAZR and the Wi-Fi-only XOOM in the UK can now expect to see Android 4.0 hitting their devices in Q2 of this year. Originally, it was thought that the Motorola RAZR would get Ice Cream Sandwich by Q1 of this year

Likewise, we heard from Motorola itself at a press event in London last year to expect Ice Cream Sandwich on the XOOM and XOOM 2 a little sooner than Q3 2012.

As is the case with the Motorola Atrix the 3G and Wi-Fi XOOM is in the upgrade and stage, meaning that an ICS rollout ought to be coming, but there’s no way of telling when just yet.

Motorola notes that “some products that enter the Evaluation and Planning phase may not complete the upgrade cycle.” The just-announced Motorola MOTOLUXE and Motorola PRO+ are in this Evaluation and Planning phase now. So this isn’t 100 per cent confirmation that the Atrix will get ICS, just confirmation that Motorola is considering it for ICS.

As for the Motorola DEFY, DEFY+ and DEFY Mini, these will all remain on Android 2.3 Gingerbread along with the Motorola MILESTONE and MILESTONE 2.

So, Ice Cream Sandwich will be arriving on Motorola phones and tabs little later than we’d have liked. Let’s hope that it gets here before Jellybean is announced. Check out the forum post here for a full worldwide breakdown of where and when Ice Cream Sandwich will be landing.
