Panasonic getting in on the Android game: 4.3-inch screen, NFC, coming in March

Sounds like Panasonic (see what we did there?) is intent on getting a foothold in the Android market. Word comes to us that a water resistant and dust-proof phone with a 4.3-inch screen is in the works.

According to these press renders unearthed by The Verge, it looks like NFC capability will be baked in to this phone as well – note those three letters under the camera unit. We’re looking forwards to Android Beaming stuff between this fella and our Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Panasonic’s press page notes that the yet-to-be named phone will feature:

  • An ultra-slim D-shaped design for easy portability
  • Slim bezel with high viewing quality Quarter HD (QHD) 4.3-inch large organic light emitting diode (OLED) screen
  • Waterproof and dustproof for ease of handling

At the moment it’s sounding like the result of what happened if an HTC Sensation and a Motorola Defy+ got drunk and spent the night in a seedy motel.

Given Panasonic’s black goods background, we’d hope for some kind of built-in audio enhancements a la HTC and Beats Audio and maybe some kind of integration with Panasonic’s line of HD tellies as well. We’d hope that the camera gets a flash added at some point as well.

It’s worth noting that this is a prototype and is far from the finished product. Whatever form it eventually takes, Panasonic is hoping to shift 15 million of these babies worldwide, with 9 million of these being sold in Europe. The phone is expected to hit European markets sometime in March.
