Samsung has finally revealed that the Galaxy S5 Mini, the compact version of its massive flagship smartphone, will be available in the UK from Thursday August 7th.
Although we’ve had the full details on Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Mini for quite some time now, we’ve only just heard that this miniature smartphone will be hitting UK high street stores and selected online retailers on August 7th.
The Galaxy S5 Mini is (in case you haven’t guessed) a compact version of Samsung’s massive flagship phone, the Galaxy S5, reducing the 5.1-inch screen down to a 4.5-incher. The design is the same between these two handsets, so you’ll have to make do with a plastic casing, but at least it’s still fully water resistant and the fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor are still in there.
Sadly the specs have been trimmed down for the Galaxy S5 Mini, as is often the case with compact models – only the superior Sony Xperia Z1 Compact retains much of its bigger brethren’s innards.
So, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Mini pares down the original S5’s 2.5GHz quad-core processor to a 1.4GHz chip, and the 16-megapixel camera has been slashed to an 8-megapixel snapper. Thankfully you do still get Android KitKat and full 4G support, plus a memory card slot to expand the on-board 16GB of storage.
Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini UK availability and price
So far Samsung hasn’t confirmed much beyond the basics: the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will be released in the UK on August 7th, and will be available at ‘selected online and high street retailers’.
However, Samsung did tell us that Carphone Warehouse and the Samsung Experience Stores will be stocking the Galaxy S5 Mini, and it also looks like Phones 4U will be stocking it as they already have a link set up.
As for price, online retailer Clove has it listed at £360 including VAT. Quite a lot of moolah for something with middling specs, especially considering you can snatch up the well-featured Motorola Moto G 4G for just £149.
