Nvidia launches remote-only version of the Shield TV: All you need to know

Nvidia’s super-powered Shield TV streaming box is now available in a ‘remote only’ version, at a cheaper price. Here’s all you need to know about the remote-only Shield TV, including the UK price and release date, as well as differences compared with the standard model.

The Shield TV is one of our favourite Android TV streaming devices, thanks to its incredible versatility and impressive video and gaming features.

Couch potatoes and media lovers will be set for the winter months, thanks to the Shield’s support for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Plex and all of the other essential streaming apps. You can get 4K resolution movies on the go and cast stuff from your phone, to share with the family.

However, even better is the Shield TV’s gaming chops. You can play a vast selection of great Android TV titles, including some very cool exclusive games like Half-Life 2. Nvidia’s own GeForce streaming service allows you to play the latest console titles on your telly, while PC owners can blast through a large selection of supported games beamed over their home WiFi network.

Remote-only Shield TV UK pricing and release date

The standard Nvidia Shield TV package costs £189 here in the UK and comes boxed with a dinky remote control as well as Nvidia’s rather brilliant gaming controller. The only difference with the new ‘remote only’ version is stated in the title: you don’t get the gaming controller included. In other words, this model is geared towards streamers who aren’t fussed about the gaming aspects of the Shield TV.

You don’t save much for this version of the Shield however. The UK price for the remote-only version is £179, just a tenner cheaper than the original model. The other specs remain the same, so you once again get 16GB of storage and full support for all of the usual apps and services.

Alternatively, if cash is plentiful, you can stump up £279 for the Nvidia Shield TV Pro edition. This offers up even stronger specs, for the ultimate home streaming setup.

You can pre-order the remote-only Shield TV from today, direct from Nvidia. The streamer will be released on October 18, to buy direct from Nvidia as well as in Currys PC World stores.
